Two Words That Changed Everything: A Simple Practice for Deeper Connection

May 11, 2025

You know those moments when something so simple stops you in your tracks? That's exactly what happened when I first learned about Brené Brown's two-word check in practice. In a world where we're often rushing from one thing to the next (trust me, as a solo mum to triplets, I know all about rushing!), this tiny practice has completely transformed how I think about authentic connection.

Here's the beautiful thing: it's just two words. Two honest words that describe how you're feeling in this moment. No explanation needed, no story required just pure authenticity.

As a transformation and resilience speaker, I'm always drawn to practices that create genuine human connection. When I discovered this approach from Brené Brown, it resonated deeply with everything I believe about turning pain into power and creating meaningful change.

Why does something so simple work so powerfully?

Because it gives us permission to be real. To acknowledge that yes, we might be "tired and excited" or "grateful and overwhelmed" or "peaceful and anxious" and that's perfectly ok.

As Brené Brown wisely shares, "We all have the human need to see others and to be seen." And isn't that the truth? In my journey from the darkest moments of loss to building Yellow Falcon, I've learned that our power often lies in these small moments of genuine connection.

I'm excited to begin incorporating this practice into my own professional journey:

During one on one connection calls with potential clients

In future workshops and speaking engagements where we'll dive deep into personal growth

While recording episodes for "Just Life and Lemons" (my podcast with fellow widow and solo mum, Kayla)

During meaningful conversations about transformation

The Potential Impact? Extraordinary.

When we start with authenticity, even just two words worth, something shifts. The conversations go deeper. The transformations become more profound. The connections feel more real.

I've seen how simple practices can create profound changes. I've witnessed how giving people permission to be human can transform a room. And I believe that this two word practice has the power to create ripples of authentic connection in our professional lives.

Here's what I'm learning... transformation doesn't always require grand gestures or complex strategies. Sometimes, it starts with two simple words and the courage to share them.

Want to try it?

Next time you're meeting someone whether it's a client, a colleague, or even catching up with a friend start with "How about we share two words about how we're feeling right now?"

You might be surprised at how such a small practice can create such meaningful change.

After all, in this world of constant doing, sometimes the bravest act is simply being and inviting others to do the same.
